Immediate dentures are made prior to having your teeth extracted. These extractions will be done by either your Dentist or an Oral Surgeon, arranged by either your dentist or our office. Immediate Dentures are made in such a way that they accommodate the swelling of the gums following surgery. After surgery, your gums and underlying bone will naturally shrink as they heal. This process can take up to 6 months.

After surgery, as the swelling goes down, the dentures will become loose. This is to be expected, therefore, we will make an appointment for a “medicated tissue conditioner” to be applied in your denture. This will help medicate and condition your sore gums and most important to you, it will assist in making the denture snug once again.

At the end of the healing period (approx. 3-6 months) following the extractions, a “rebase/reline” must be done. The shrinkage of your gums and underlying bone has now taken place and you are ready for the final step. As mentioned above, the previous tissue conditioners were only a “temporary” measure. An impression will be taken inside your existing denture/s and new acrylic will be processed.

Immediate dentures are a transitional denture that allows you to have the denture fitted at the time your teeth are extracted. You will leave the dentist with your smile intact!

How long do immediate dentures last?

Generally we recommend replacing them with a new denture within 12 months. Your immediate denture can generally still be used as a spare for 3 - 5 years. Some clients find they work well for them for a 2 to 3 years but this depends your gum health and how your responds to the extraction.
